Stance on Issues

Comprehensive Immigration Reform
  • OCA supports reform that provides a path to legalization for undocumented immigrants, keeps families together, honors due process, ends workplace raids, and does not trade families for workers.
  • OCA supports the passage of the recently reintroduced DREAM Act, which would allow eligible undocumented high school students to legalize their immigration status by attending college.
  • OCA urges members of Congress to direct DHS to create enforceable detention standards and create independent oversight of detention facilities to ensure that all ICE detainees are treated fairly and humanely.
  • Asian Pacific Americans are disproportionately affected by the family immigration backlogs. They often have to wait over a decade to reunite with a family member. Congress needs to reduce the backlog to make sure people can reunite in a timely manner.

Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) Program
  • The AANAPISI provide grants to colleges and universities that have an enrollment of undergraduate students that is at least 10 percent Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander to improve their academic quality, increase their self sufficiency and strengthen their capacity to serve students. There are currently 6 awardees, including UMD-College Park and the City College of San Francisco.
  • Congress should expand the program by appropriating $30 million to it each year, which will help build the infrastructure to support the educational needs of APIA communities.

Health Care
  • OCA supports comprehensive health care reform for all. We believe everyone should have access to quality and affordable health care.
  • The Asian Pacific American community has significant disparities in health care access that can be addressed by comprehensive reform.
